Northwest Basin Trail
Northwest Basin Trail is the long-distance hiking route in Baxter State Park that runs from Russell Pond toward the Katahdin tablelands, reaching the area where the Saddle Trail and Hamlin Ridge Trail connect for access up to Hamlin Peak and onward to Baxter Peak.
On the ground it’s a rugged, remote backcountry line: the route is cut through isolated terrain tied to the Northwest Basin’s cirque country, with steep ascents and frequent stream crossings that tend to make conditions wet and demanding even when the rest of the park feels calmer.
Length varies with where you start and finish, but a common Russell Pond–based option runs roughly 8.4 miles on the Northwest Basin Trail alone. An overnight-focused approach is the best match for most parties, with Davis Pond sitting partway through the experience as a reservable lean-to area.
A typical “big day” reference point is a Russell Pond to Davis Pond day effort in the neighborhood of 5.2 miles between those two points, with continuing travel after that if you’re pushing farther toward the plateau connections.
If you’re approaching from the Chimney Pond side, the route setup changes to a longer day that takes in multiple major climbs; it’s referenced as about 9 miles with two major ascents from Chimney Pond in order to reach the plateau area connections.
Baxter State Park management constraints matter on this itinerary: backcountry camping is reservation-based, and when an overnight includes Davis Pond Lean-to there is a first-night rule requiring that your first night be spent at Russell Pond or Chimney Pond instead.
If you plan to camp on the Davis Pond side, treat open-fire rules and backcountry policies as non-negotiable: open fires are prohibited, and any day/overnight timing cutoffs are strictly enforced for getting into the backcountry zones. Carry a headlamp for early departures and plan around the park’s posted cutoff times for leaving trailheads.
