Barnes Lake Cabin
Barnes Lake Cabin is a primitive backcountry cabin on the western shore of Barnes Lake, a saltwater lagoon on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. It’s managed by the US Forest Service and is reached only by float plane, boat, or kayak depending on conditions (tide matters for boat access).
Inside is a 12-by-12-foot pan-abode-style cedar log structure with wooden bunks that sleeps four to six, plus a table and wood stove for heat. There’s an outside vault toilet, but there’s no freshwater source near the cabin—bring your own water and plan to cook and clean with what you carry.
Access and supplies are fully self-directed. Bring sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cook stove and cooking gear, matches, lantern/flashlight, toilet paper, and garbage bags; wood may be available but isn’t guaranteed. The site has a nightly fee with seasonal rates, and stays require reservations through the Recreation.gov platform.
