Downes hut

Downes Hut is a serviced backcountry hut in Whanganui National Park, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s a five-bunk, boat-in only hut on the Whanganui River, with no tracks or roads leading to it and no camping allowed in the area around the hut. It has drinking water (untreated), a fireplace, mattresses, and toilet facilities including a pit latrine.

Use requires planning around bookings and fees: serviced bookings are required, and Backcountry Hut Passes are valid for stays from 1 May to 30 September (not accepted from 1 October to 30 April). Bookings are open for stays up to 30 June 2027, fully booked conditions can appear online for the dates you want, and there’s no space kept for walk-ins without a booking. Water safety matters on the river—boil, filter, or treat water if you doubt its purity—and there’s no cellphone coverage along the Whanganui River. Wasps are a known hazard, especially from January to May.
