La Chaume des Veaux (les amis de la nature)

La Chaume des Veaux (les amis de la nature) is an association-run backcountry chalet/refuge near the Champ du Feu area, on the Hohwald side at about 980 m. It’s used for short stays and as an overnight stop for walkers coming through the GR5 area, with the chalet operating primarily on weekends and French school holiday periods (Zone B).

The refuge has 80 beds across 20 rooms (2 to 6 beds). Shared facilities include a fully equipped collective kitchen, plus hot and cold showers; lounge time is supported by a large common terrace and an on-site games area (including a table-tennis table and babyfoot).

Plan to self-cater: the chalet-refuge does not provide catering, though you can cook using the provided kitchen equipment. You’re expected to bring a sleeping bag or sheets; beds are supplied with pillows and blankets. Payment is handled without card payments (cash, cheque vacances, and bank transfer are used), and you can bring dogs if they’re kept on a leash.

Use is not open to “location libre” (full independent rental of the chalet-refuge); stays are hosted by the volunteer team. The current adult rate is €17/night (with a lower rate for children under 14), and bookings are handled by contacting their reservation office directly rather than via online self-booking.
