Maxi Cabin
Maxi Cabin is a recreation rental cabin in Hyalite Canyon on the Bozeman District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest. The main cabin has bunk beds with mattresses for up to four people and a wood stove; there’s also a smaller unheated summer cabin for up to two. Together, the two cabins accommodate up to 15 people, with a vault toilet and a campfire ring outside.
Expect a minimalist setup: there’s no water or electricity in the cabin, and you need to bring your own drinking water and cooking and personal supplies (including bedding and toilet paper). The cabin is kept locked and entry uses a combination lock code provided with your reservation confirmation. Access is by car in summer, but during spring (March 31–May 16) the road closes to motorized traffic; plan on walking or biking roughly 12 miles to reach the cabin. Winter access is limited as well—park and ski, snowshoe, or hike the final distance (about 2/3 mile) and be prepared for infrequent road plowing; a 4-wheel-drive/high-clearance vehicle or skis/snow travel may be needed. Overnight use costs $65 per night, and you’ll need to make reservations online with a Recreation.gov account up to six months in advance.
