Nicolum Knob

Nicolum Knob is a roughly 180 m south-facing granite buttress east of Hope, above the junction of Highways 3 and 5 near the Coquihalla River. The climbing combines cracks, technical face moves, and slabs, with steeper sections divided by ledges that work well for multi-pitch routes and rappels.

The area has 13 listed routes, mixing traditional and sport climbing. Lines reach four pitches, with several routes around 5.10, including Land Down Under (5.10a), Exaggerator (5.10b), and To Bolt or Not to Bee (5.10c). The eastern sector includes Dead Soles, First Blood, and Kyle Hudie Route; Kemosabe, To Bolt or Not to Bee, Sakura, Lust, and Greed lie farther west along the approach.

The main face dries quickly after rain because of its southerly aspect. Inspect committed features before climbing, particularly when the rock or approach has been wet, and confirm current conditions before relying on the route information.

Approach from the Coquihalla Highway. Parking is described on the shoulder of the northbound Highway 5 on-ramp, about five minutes from the cliff; cross Nicolum Creek on foot and look for the hubcap marker nailed to a small tree at the trail start. A back-of-the-formation trail through the west-side gully provides another way to reach the top for rappel access.
