Refugio José Diem (Acceso sólo con llave)
Refugio José Diem (also known as Refugio Colorado) is a private backcountry mountain shelter on Cerro Colorado in the Villa La Angostura area. Entry requires arranging permission and obtaining the key in advance through Cabañas Maite, and the refuge has no permanent public service without authorization.
Access is tied to a lake crossing: you need to contract a boat for the crossing of Lago Nahuel Huapi from Villa La Angostura to the area near Puerto Chabvol, where the trekking trail begins. After the hike segment starts, the approach includes an officially enabled, signposted section through forest up toward the refuge; the route continues toward Cumbre 1920 beyond the shelter.
For planning an overnight or vivac-style stay: there is not water along the entire route, and the refuge area is associated with an arroyo used as a water source; if it’s dry higher up, you may have to go back down to collect water from that point. Trekking registration is required with park authorities, and use of the refuge involves a reduced cost for the right of use, coordinated when requesting the key.
