Refugio Plantat

Refugio Plantat is a small, rustic backcountry refuge at about 3,130 m in the Cajón del Maipo area, at the foot of Volcán San José. Built in 1937, it’s intended as free, use-on-your-own trip lodging rather than a serviced mountain facility.

Capacity is very limited—about 8 to 10 people inside—so don’t assume you’ll have a guaranteed spot. The refuge has no basic utilities such as potable water, electricity, or equipped bathrooms; plan to be fully self-sufficient and bring high-mountain gear (including a suitable sleeping bag for cold temperatures), plus cooking setup (stove/gas) and a personal first-aid kit. If you need backup for sleeping, camping in the surrounding area is expected if the hut is full.

The approach route starts in the sector known as El Cabrerío. Typical timing for the trip is around 4 hours uphill and 3 hours downhill, with roughly 920 m of elevation gain; the exact pace and snow/ice on the path can change these estimates.
