Schofields Hut is a very basic backcountry shelter on the Tantangara Plain (Kosciuszko National Park). It’s intended for temporary emergency use rather than as a standard overnight stop, and it’s known for a fireplace that smokes into the main area, so avoid planning to sleep with the fire going.

Use is free and it can’t be booked in advance; expect first-come, first-served access. The shelter has very limited facilities—no reliable water nearby and no toilet—so bring everything you need (including water and waste disposal) and plan on camping outside the hut if you’re staying overnight. The chimney is also reputed to be smoky, with only emergency sleeping recommended (about 2–4 people in a pinch).

Access is by walking from the Schofields Trailhead on Tantangara Road (about a 6 km walk or ride), or via a shorter approach of about 3.5 km from Circuits Trail / Nungar Creek Trail.
