South Snow Shelter

South Snow Shelter is a rustic backcountry snow shelter in the Willamette National Forest. Use is first-come, first-served (no reservations), and the shelter must be shared with other groups already there. It’s maintained as a warming shelter and is also used as an overnight emergency shelter.

Overnight stays are permitted from November 15 to April 30, with a maximum stay limit of 3 nights. Shelters are backcountry sites: pack out all garbage and human waste if there is no restroom facility, avoid leaving food behind, and follow Leave No Trace practices. Candles are not allowed, bring your own lights, and if firewood is provided it’s for use in woodstoves only; share space, keep fires contained, and fully extinguish them before leaving.
