Te Whare Okioki Hut

Te Whare Okioki Hut is a serviced backcountry hut in Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty region, run by the Department of Conservation. The hut provides 12 bunk beds and is on the site of the earlier Ngamuwahine clearing and shelter on the North South Track, about an hour south of the Te Tuhi / Ngamarama / North South track junction. Water and a fireplace are available, and the hut is equipped with mattresses; the hut has no toilets, and there is camping space outside the hut.

Plan on booking ahead online—serviced bookings are required, and your booking covers a bunk bed (not a specific numbered bunk). Fees apply (including adult/youth/child rates listed on the official page), and Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets can’t be used here. Bring a warm sleeping bag, warm clothing, cooking gear, food, and wet-weather gear; surplus food should be kept away from the hut area to deter vermin. Access is via multiple routes from suggested road ends (typically requiring an overnight pack), and in wet weather tracks can get muddy with some streams potentially becoming impassable during heavy rain.
