Memorial Ledge

Loading map…

Memorial Ledge lies on the North Apron of Stawamus Chief, roughly 750 feet above the ground. It is the setting for a memorial plaque commemorating climber Jim Baldwin (1938–1964).

The ledge is a key transition point on several multi-pitch lines. Calculus Crack reaches it through easier upper terrain, while pitches 8 and 9 of Long Time No See climb from the North Apron to above the ledge. Memorial Crack starts at its north end: a 5.9 YDS traditional climb of about 100 feet (30–35 m), with protection to 4 inches and a bolted belay at the top.

Descent options from the ledge area include four rappels into South Gully with a 70 m rope, or a walk-off via Broadway Ledge and a fourth-class gully system; the walk-off is described as taking approximately 1.5–2 hours. Peregrine-falcon closures have included Memorial Ledge, Memorial Crack, Karen’s Math, and the upper pitches of Long Time No See, so current restrictions are important before climbing in this sector.
