Angelus Hut

Angelus Hut is a serviced backcountry hut in Nelson Lakes National Park, run by the Department of Conservation in the Nelson/Tasman region. It sits at about 1,650 m on the shores of Lake Angelus and provides 28 bunk beds; bookings are required year-round for stays in the hut (and the nearby campsite).

For most years, May to October brings winter hazard conditions—snow, ice, avalanche risk, and sub-zero temperatures—with hut facilities sometimes reduced (including water and firewood). Bring a system for cooking (no cookers are provided) and be ready for reduced services; there are no rubbish bins, and you’ll need to take your waste out with you. Fees apply in the hut season covered by Backcountry Hut Passes (1 May to 30 September), and there is no overnight bin-to-bin convenience—advance booking is required and no spaces are held for walk-ins. The hut has drinking water that’s not treated, a fireplace, and pit latrines for toilet disposal.
