Balloon Hut
Balloon Hut is a serviced Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Mount Arthur area of Kahurangi National Park (Nelson/Tasman). The hut has 14 bunks and is set up for stays where you need to arrive with a booking plan; online bookings open for stays up to 30 June 2027, and there are no spaces kept for walk-ins if the hut shows as fully booked. Fees are charged, and backcountry hut passes can be used at this hut.
Access into the Mount Arthur area is via the steep and narrow Graham Valley Road, which can be affected by corrugations and slips; during winter, a 4WD vehicle is recommended to reach the Flora carpark, with chains sometimes needed for snow and ice. The hut provides drinking water described as untreated, includes mattresses, and has toilet facilities using a pit latrine; there is a fireplace.
