Baraque des Carriers

Baraque des Carriers is a rustic, unstaffed mountain hut in the Belledonne Alps (Isère) at 1,465 m. It’s set up for simple overnight stays rather than comfort: there’s no heating, and the shelter is exposed to strong drafts.

Sleep setups are basic, with provision for about 2 to 4 people; bedding is limited to a couple of mattresses and there are a few blankets. Inside you’ll find a table, fixed benches, stools, and basic cookware items (including a set of gamelles).

Facilities are minimal: no latrines, and cooking relies on what the hut provides (there is no fireplace/heating system provided). Expect very limited water availability; when water exists locally it’s typically up the path near the Grand-Colon area.

Use is first-come, first-served and free—there’s no reservation process in advance. Pack a sleeping bag/liner if you’re cold-sensitive, and plan to carry everything you need in case the hut is full; it’s also smart to bring your own waste and cleaning supplies so the next party finds it ready to use.

Approach starts from the Freydières area. Walk the forest track south for about 3.5 km, then the hut sits along the path on the left; a forest-section trail blazes (white/red/white) guide the short connector to the shelter.
