Brown Hut

Brown Hut is a 16-bunk backcountry hut in Kahurangi National Park, on the Heaphy Track near the Golden Bay end. It sits by the Brown River area and is a short walk (about 5 minutes) from the start of the track at the Golden Bay side, making it a useful first-night stop when you want an early start or when road fords are impassable due to flooding. Facilities include long-drop toilets with toilet paper, cold running water, mattresses, and communal sleeping with platform bunks; heating is provided, but there’s no gas cooking and no lighting—bring a sleeping bag and your own cooker and cooking utensils.

Reservations are required for stays. It’s one of the Great Walk huts on the Heaphy Track, and hut bookings/capacity are handled via the Great Walks online system rather than through Backcountry Hut Passes or Backcountry Hut Tickets. If you’re entering with NZ or international pricing, the adult rates vary by season (from 1 July–31 August: $30 NZ or $30 international per adult per night; higher seasons charge more), and the NZ reduced rate requires proof of eligibility. The hut is at the end of Aorere Valley Rd, reached by driving from Collingwood via the Collingwood–Bainham Main Rd, turning into Aorere Valley Rd, continuing to the end, and then walking from the Heaphy Track car park and shelter (about 13.5 km from where the road reaches the track area).
