Browning Hut

Browning Hut is a backcountry hut in Mount Richmond Forest Park (Nelson/Tasman), run by the Department of Conservation. It’s a standard hut with 8 bunks, suited to overnighters moving through the Motueka area via the associated tracks.

Standard bookings aren’t required—stays follow a first come, first served approach, using a Standard Hut Ticket bought in advance for each night and placed in the honesty box at the hut. Fees are charged through 30 June 2026 ($10 per night for adults 18+, $5 for youth 5–17, free for children/infants 0–4), and rates change from 1 July 2026.

The hut has a fireplace, mattresses, and toilets using a pit latrine system. It does not have drinking water—plan to bring your own.
