Cabane de Châtillon

Cabane de Châtillon is an unguarded backcountry hut in the Hauts-Plateaux du Vercors area, used as a free overnight stop by hikers crossing the high plateaus. The building has sleeping space for about 10 people, with bedding on a wooden floor upstairs or two sleeping spots on the lower level; there’s also a wood stove and basic utensils (including a broom and a shovel).

Use is first-come, first-served (no booking system). It sits inside a nature reserve with strict rules: dogs are prohibited (even on leash), fires are prohibited, camping is prohibited, but bivouacking is allowed with a defined window (set up after 5pm and remove before 9am). Bring your own sleeping mat and sleeping bag, plus your food; there are no mattresses provided. A nearby water source (Baume Rousse) is about 10 minutes away, though winter access may be difficult or impossible.
