Cabane de Estom
Cabane de Estom is a backcountry refuge on the banks of the Lac d’Estom near Cauterets (Hautes-Pyrénées). It’s used as a summer stop for hikers coming from routes via the Gentianes pass, the Araillé pass, or the Clot Refuge, and it also sits on established, well-marked hiking paths that climb from plateau to plateau through forested terrain.
Overnight use is managed for the refuge season from late May through early October, with reservations required for stays and for meals. The refuge has 28 beds across dormitories of 12 and 16. Half-board is priced at about €47 for adults and €39 for children under 12, with an additional picnic option available by reservation; payment on-site is cash or cheques (no credit cards). Arrival is capped at 18h, with dinner served at 19:00 and breakfast from 07:00 to 08:30.
Practical hut services include hot and cold drinks, a spring at the refuge for refilling bottles, full evening meals with a single menu, and snacks during the day; hot drinks are available during the day as well. Plan for warm clothing since access can get steeper and stonier after the Portail de Limouras.
