Cabane du Pesson
Cabane du Pesson is a small, unguarded backcountry hut above the Hospice de France area in the French Pyrenees. It’s a single-room shelter with sleeping for about 12 people (including 4 on mattresses) and a fireplace. Inside, there’s a table and a dedicated cooking area (with a large “coin cuisine” layout), plus bas flancs for storing gear.
Use is free and first-come, first-served—there’s no advance booking. Access is generally tied to the road and trail season: the approach road to Hospice de France is typically closed from late November to mid-April, so the hut is effectively usable only during the warmer months. For approach and care, expect to bring your own supplies; pack out all trash and leave the hut clean for the next party. Water is available nearby in summer (and you may need to melt snow early in the season).
