Carkeek Hut

Carkeek Hut is a standard six-bunk backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s in a remote area with no DOC track access, so you’ll need to plan your route and navigate using a map, compass, and GPS.

Use is on a first-come, first-served basis (no standard bookings required). Sleep capacity is limited to six bunks; before you go, purchase a Standard Hut Ticket (adult blue 18+, yellow for youth 5–17) for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut. Fees are $10 per night for adults and $5 per night for youth (under 5 free), with “from 1 July 2026” rate changes applying after that date. The hut has drinking water that’s untreated and toilets with pit latrine disposal, and there is a fireplace and mattresses.
