Castle Rock Hut

Castle Rock Hut is a standard 8-bunk backcountry hut in Abel Tasman National Park (Nelson/Tasman). Managed by the Department of Conservation, it’s set up for first come, first served stays—no standard bookings are required, but you must buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut. The hut sleeps up to 8 people and includes mattresses and toilets (pit latrine); drinking water is untreated, and there is no fireplace provided.

Stay logistics are timed around nearby road ends and Inland Track approach options. From Marahau (Harvey Road) via Inland Track it’s about 5 hr 30 min (15.1 km). Other DOC-listed Inland Track times include Holyoakes Shelter to the hut (about 3 hr) and Awapoto Hut (about 6 hr, 13 km); the approach from those points is supported as a 3-day trip. Fees are $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4), with rates due to change from 1 July 2026.
