Gouland Downs Hut

Gouland Downs Hut is an 8-bunk backcountry hut on the Heaphy Track in Kahurangi National Park (Nelson/Tasman). It’s run by the Department of Conservation, with a reservation required for Great Walk bookings on this track. The hut has an open fire and long-drop pit latrines, plus cold running water; mattresses are provided but you need your own sleeping bag.

Bring a cooker and cooking utensils—there are no gas cooking facilities at Gouland Downs Hut. There’s no lighting at the hut, and there are no showers. The hut is priced per person, per night (with different rates by season, including free “Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets” not usable at this hut), and bookings are handled through the Great Walks system.
