Half Moon Hut

Half Moon Hut is a historic musterers’ hut in the Molesworth Recreation Reserve on Molesworth Station, set along Half Moon Stream in Marlborough, New Zealand. It’s a basic off-the-grid backcountry stop used by walkers and other tramping parties heading through the reserve’s remote river country.

The hut sleeps up to 6 people (6 bunks) and is very basic: it has an open fire for heating, a simple sleeping setup, and water is available nearby via the stream (water should be boiled before drinking). Fire practice matters here—carry out your rubbish and make sure any fire is fully extinguished when you leave.

Access is backcountry-style: expect a tramping/hiking approach, or a backcountry 4x4 drive to get close when conditions and seasonal access allow. For planning, be ready for variable river conditions between river crossings along the usual farm-track approaches.
