Hopeless Hut
Hopeless Hut is a standard 6-bunk backcountry hut in Nelson Lakes National Park, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s built for first-come, first-served use (no bookings required), with 6 bunks available, and it’s located below an avalanche path.
The hut has a fireplace and mattresses, and toilets use a pit latrine. Fees apply: adult (18+) $10 per night and youth (5–17) $5 per night; booking isn’t required, but you must buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night’s stay and place it in the honesty box at the hut, or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts. Avoid staying in the hut during winter storms or when snow reaches the valley floor, because avalanche debris may reach the hut; alternative accommodation listed is Lakehead Hut (about 5 hours away) or camping in the lower valley away from avalanche danger.
