John Reid Hut

John Reid Hut is a standard 6-bunk backcountry hut in Kahurangi National Park (Nelson/Tasman), operated by the Department of Conservation. It sits at 1240 m on the eastern side of the Arthur Range, built as a base for multi-day trips in the Wangapeka area, with access easiest via Chummies Track from the Wangapeka; it can also be combined with Chummies Track and Kiwi Track for a 3-day loop option that includes the hut.

Sleeping is first come, first served and no standard booking is required. Fees apply: from 30 June 2026, adult (18+) is $10 per night, youth (5–17) is $5 per night, and children/infants (0–4) are free; you’ll need a Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut, or use a Backcountry Hut Pass. The hut has a fireplace, mattresses, and toilet facilities including a pit latrine; drinking water is not provided.
