Lower Deck

Lower Deck is a compact climbing sector within Sunny Side near Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The 12 m wall has 12 routes spanning sport, trad, and top-rope climbing, with grades from 5.8 to 5.12a. Named lines include High Tide (5.11d), Lower Momentum (5.10b), Turbulence (5.11c), Wishbone (5.8), and Junkyard (5.12a).

The sector lies beneath Upper Deck. From the Sunny Side approach, reach it either by rappel or by scrambling over rock along the path between First Cliffs and Upper Deck. The crag is sandstone and conglomerate, which remains fragile when wet; allow at least 24 hours after rain before climbing. Where top-anchor hooks are installed, use them for lowering only—do not top-rope through them or climb above them.
