Mid Pohangina Hut
Mid Pohangina Hut is a four-bunk backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park, operated by the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai. It’s a standard four-bunk hut maintained by the Palmerston North Tramping and Mountaineering Club, with first-come, first-served use (no standard bookings required).
The hut has mattresses and a woodburner, and a water tank beside the hut provides the water supply with no feed into the hut. Heating is via the woodburner, toilets are a pit latrine, and a wood fire is available for the fireplace/woodburner. There’s no drinking water supply feed into the hut; plan to treat water from the tank for drinking.
Hut tickets are required for stays: buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut, or use a DOC Backcountry Hut Pass. Fees are part of DOC’s hut ticket system, with rates changing from 1 July 2026. Maintenance responsibility sits with the Palmerston North Tramping and Mountaineering Club; donations are welcome and suggested as a minimum of $5 a night.
