Rangiwahia Hut

Rangiwahia Hut is a serviced backcountry hut run by the Department of Conservation in Ruahine Forest Park (Manawatu/Whanganui region). It has 13 bunk beds, with pit latrine toilets. Water is provided from an untreated tank supply, and there is a wood burner for heating (wood can be used for heating, and dry kindling is useful); gas cooking facilities have been removed, so you need a portable stove and fire-lighting gear.

The start of the track is from the Renfrew Roadend car park. The walk up is typically 2–3 hours and climbs from the beech forest toward tussock-covered open tops above the bush line on the Whanahuia Range. Bookings are required for stays, and dogs are not allowed anywhere in Ruahine Forest Park, including on and off lead. The hut is also part of the Rangiwahia–Deadmans Loop (7–9 hours), which should not be attempted in poor visibility or bad weather due to travel across open tops.
