Ministry of Works Historic Hut

Ministry of Works Historic Hut is a basic backcountry hut in Kahurangi National Park (Golden Bay area) run by the Department of Conservation. It’s a 6-bunk hut that used to be known as Mackay Downs Hut, with use on a first-come, first-served basis and no bookings required.

The hut has a fireplace, sleeping mattresses, and toilet facilities (pit latrine), and it doesn’t have drinking water available. There is no DOC track access, so you need to navigate to the hut using your own map, compass, and GPS. Fees are free.
