Mt Arthur Hut
Mt Arthur Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Kahurangi National Park (Mount Arthur area), set on the bushline around 1,300 m. It’s used as a half-day walk option or as an overnight tramp, with 8 bunk beds in basic hut-style accommodation.
The hut has platform bunk beds with mattresses, cold water from a rain-collection tank, and a woodburner with firewood supplied (use it sparingly; it’s only restocked once or twice each year). A long-drop toilet sits a short walk from the hut. Take a sleeping bag, cooking stove plus pots/pans/utensils, toilet paper, a rubbish bag, and items for the woodburner (newspaper/firelighters and matches/lighter) along with a torch.
DOC hut bookings are required; bookings open for stays up to 30 June 2027. Fees are charged per night (adult 18+ $25; youth 5–17 $12.50; child/infant 0–4 free; current pricing applies through 30 June 2026, with new rates from 1 July 2026). Same-day online bookings are available until 8 pm if spaces remain; if there’s no availability shown, the hut is fully booked and no spots are held for walk-in arrivals. The access road into the Mount Arthur area (Graham Valley Road) is steep and narrow, prone to corrugations and slips; the last 5.8 km to Flora car park is unsealed and turning a vehicle there can be difficult. A 4WD vehicle is recommended year-round, with chains sometimes needed in snow and ice.
