Newdegate Hut

Newdegate Hut is a basic backcountry hut on the edge of Lake Newdegate in Tasmania’s Mount Field National Park. It was built by the Tasmanian Ski Club in the mid-1930s and is used as an emergency shelter as well as a night stop for day walkers and ski tourers operating in the Tarn Shelf area.

It’s free to use as a public shelter, but entry to Mount Field National Park requires a valid parks pass. Plan for limited shelter conditions: the hut has been described as rudimentary, and if it’s full (or conditions make travel unsafe), you should be prepared to sleep outdoors with a proper cold-weather setup rather than relying on the hut alone.
