No. 3 Hut
No. 3 Hut is a standard 16-bunk backcountry hut in the Lake Sumner Forest Park/Conservation Park area in Canterbury, used by trampers along the Harper Pass Track. It’s a three-roomed T-shaped hut with rough-sawn vertical board and batten cladding and a corrugated iron roof; heating is by wood burner (replacing an earlier open fire). The hut sits on the Hurunui River (North Branch) valley floor, at about 1495 m elevation.
Plan on the typical hut setup: mattresses on bunks, non-flush (vault) toilets, and heating. Water comes from a rainwater tank or stream and needs boiling before drinking (it isn’t potable). Use is first-come, first-served—no bookings required—but you must pay the required hut ticket or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for each night. Dogs aren’t permitted on the track or in the hut.
