Red Hill Cabin

Red Hill Cabin is a Mauna Loa Trail backcountry wilderness hut within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, operated by the National Park Service. The cabin sits at 10,035 ft (3,059 m) and is reached via the Mauna Loa Trail from the top of Mauna Loa Road; it’s one of the three main backcountry sites on Mauna Loa. The hut has sleeping quarters for 8 (8 bunks) and includes a sheltered space, a cooking area, and a pit toilet; water is available but must be treated before drinking.

Use is limited to 24 hikers per night at the Puʻuʻulaʻula (Red Hill) area, and permits are required for backcountry campsites, including Red Hill Cabin. Pack for high altitude and cold-weather conditions: overnight temperatures are below freezing at night year-round, open fires are prohibited, and you’ll need to carry essential gear such as a tent/bivy, a sleeping bag rated to 0°F or better, and enough treated water for your time on the trail.
