Refuge de la Combe (non gardé)

Refuge de la Combe (non gardé) is an unstaffed mountain hut in the Bauges (Montagne du Charbon), at about 1,572–1,573 m. It’s used as a backcountry shelter outside the staffed period, with a winter setup that’s meant for emergency/backup stays rather than full refuge service.

In the non-gardé season, expect basic sheltering: a wood stove and some cooking utensils, plus a wood stock that may be limited (bring what you can and help replenish). Use is first-come, first-served: there’s no advance booking system, and you follow the hut’s guest-book/payment process if a fee is requested.

Sleep setup is by mats in the hut; you’ll want your own sleeping bag (and a liner is useful). Plan for water being unavailable in winter—running water may be shut off—so you may need to melt snow or bring your own. Take your trash out and be mindful of wood use.

Several approaches are possible, including via Lathuile (Route de Saury / Montgelaz), Chevaline (Route du moulin), or Bellecombe-en-Bauges (via Mont devant, then the Pas de la Combe). The Pas de la Combe can be problematic when snowy or icy, so winter travel gear matters.
