Refuge du Hahnenbrunnen

Refuge du Hahnenbrunnen is a backcountry hut in the Vosges, owned by the Touring Club Mulhouse and staffed by volunteers. It sits on the route des Crêtes and on the GR5 at about 1180–1200 m, ~5 km from the Markstein toward the Schlucht, and works as a stop for a night on the trail or a quick break with a drink.

The hut has capacity for 32 people and offers free drinking water in open access. Bedding is provided in two dormitories of 16 beds (with pillows and blankets), but you should bring a draps-sac (sheet sleeping bag) or sleeping bag; there is also the option to buy sheets on site. Cooking is available with an equipped kitchen, and drinks are sold year-round.

Use runs on an open-hours model: it is open every weekend from Saturday 16:00 to Sunday 16:00, and also open during July and August every day. Fees apply: €10 per person for a night (or 24 hours) and €10 for a weekend, with €5 for under 16s. During summer, you can also eat at the nearby farm-auberge of Hahnenbrunnen (phone listed on the hut information page).
