Refuge du Pelvoux

Refuge du Pelvoux is a backcountry hut in the Écrins massif, managed by Club Alpin Français, at an elevation of 2,694 m. It has 54 beds during the guarded period and is also used outside guard time with 10 beds (winter use).

The hut is guarded continuously from the end of May to the end of August, with additional open weekends around Ascension and Pentecost depending on conditions. Dormitories provide sleeping places with covers or duvets (50/50 mix), and general comfort is basic with no cooking gas and only a few rare pots; there is also no nearby water in autumn in some years.

The refuge is reached from Ailefroide, with a mountain ascent taking about 3.5 hours. It serves as a base for high-mountain routes including traverses and ascents such as the traversée du mont Pelvoux, and also offers access to the nearby historic Lemercier refuge, which has been converted into a museum and can provide sleeping on request from the caretaker.
