Refuge Russel
Refuge Russel is a non-guarded backcountry hut in the Cauterets area at 1980 m, used as a free, first-come shelter for overnight stops. It is set up for self-service stays with mattresses and blankets, and it has a fireplace for burning wood.
Inside, the main room has tables and benches, a fireplace/wood-stove setup, cooking utensils, and stored provisions; an upstairs dormitory provides around 15–16 sleeping places on tightly packed mattresses with a stack of blankets. There’s a water source in front of the refuge, and wood is typically available along the approach or near the hut, with an exterior area for toilets nearby.
Plan on a short hike in approach from La Fruitière (about 2 hours from the parking area for the climb side). Use is on a first-come basis (no reservation), and it’s customary to leave a small cash donation (often around €5) for upkeep.
