Speargrass Hut

Speargrass Hut is a 12-bunk serviced hut on the Speargrass Hut Track in Nelson Lakes National Park, run by the Department of Conservation. The hut sits in a tussock clearing at about 1060 m and is set up for backcountry overnights with platform bunks, mattresses, cold water from a rain collection tank, and a wood burner; firewood is usually provided when resupply runs normally.

Bookings are required, and the hut uses hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Passes for stays. Fees run $25 per night for adults (18+) and $12.50 for youth (5–17) up to 30 June 2026 (with new rates from 1 July 2026); camping at the hut is $10 per night for adults and $5 for youth using hut tickets/Backcountry Hut Passes or a Campsite Pass. Bring a sleeping bag, cooking stove and utensils (pots/pans/utensils), toilet paper, a rubbish bag, plus fire starting and a torch; there’s a long-drop toilet a short walk away and the water supply is cold/untreated.
