Sylvester Hut
Sylvester Hut is a serviced 12-bunk backcountry hut in Kahurangi National Park (Golden Bay area), operated by the Department of Conservation. Bookings are required for stays, and backcountry hut passes can be used there.
Facilities include untreated drinking water and toilets with pit latrine disposal. The hut has mattresses and a fireplace, and fees apply (adult $25 per night; youth $12.50 per night; children/infants 0–4 years free, with updated rates from 1 July 2026). Access is via 4WD on the Cobb Dam Road into the Cobb valley in winter, when ice and/or snow can make the road difficult.
Online bookings are open for stays up to 30 June 2027; if your dates show no availability, the hut is fully booked and no spaces are kept for walk-in arrivals. Same-day online bookings can be made until 8 pm if rooms remain, and phone or in-person bookings at a visitor centre include a $10 service fee.
