Tahurangi Lodge
Tahurangi Lodge is a private backcountry hut operated by the Taranaki Alpine Club, set above the bush line on the north side of Taranaki Maunga at about 1,500m. It’s a base for alpine activities on the mountain, including summer hiking and rock climbing, and winter ice climbing and skiing.
Access is on foot from the road end at the North Egmont Visitors Centre car park, with an average walk time of about 1½ hours to reach the lodge. The lodge sleeps 26 people in two bunk rooms; bring a sleeping bag and food.
The lodge has electricity and a kitchen stocked with stoves, microwave ovens, a fridge, and basic cookware and eating utensils. During winter months, the snow line sits below the lodge, and visitors need mountaineering skills and equipment to access safely. Tahurangi Lodge is available for club members and affiliated groups, with space reserved for members; the general public can use it when booked online in advance, subject to confirmation.
