Too Much Johnson Cabin
Too Much Johnson Cabin is a basic backcountry shelter in the historic Gold Hill Mining District near Chisana in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. It’s a fly-in cabin accessed via the nearby Chisana Airstrip, and in winter it can be reached by snowmachine along a 60-mile trail from Nabesna Road. The cabin sits at about 3,318 ft and is 11 ft by 15 ft.
The cabin has two twin-sized wooden bunks (sleeps two), a wood-burning stove, a table with chairs, and a rustic pit toilet (bring toilet paper). There’s no running water or plumbing. Use is first-come, first-served with no reservations required, and the maximum stay is 7 days in a 30-day period; plan to arrive with backup camping gear in case it’s occupied.
Water and firewood require self-sufficiency: visitors may gather dead and down wood for the stove, but water isn’t readily available and typically must be collected from a spring or Chathenda Creek about 1/2 mile northeast of the cabin (these sources can be difficult to reach and may be dry—bring your own water). The area supports hiking and exploration near the cabin, including extended treks along the Chisana River or toward the Gold Hill historic mining district about 10 miles northwest.
