Upper Travers Hut
Upper Travers Hut is a serviced 24-bunk backcountry hut in Nelson Lakes National Park (Nelson/Tasman region), run by the Department of Conservation. It’s set up for walkers using the Nelson Lakes hut network, with on-site water access and toilets (pit latrine).
Bookings are required for stays, with hut tickets for access and Backcountry Hut Passes accepted for use in this hut from 1 May to 30 September; outside that window, the pass isn’t accepted for hut use. Fees run to 30 June 2026 at $25 per night for adults and $12.50 for youth (5–17), and then update from 1 July 2026. Campers can use hut water and toilets, and the hut follows biosecurity precautions for lake water/lake-snow spread; keep gear completely dry for 48 hours after contact with alpine lake/tarn water before swimming or taking water from those lakes and tars, and use a biosecurity cleaning station at Coldwater Hut, Lakehead Hut and Sabine Hut if you have wet or damp items from lake/river water.
