Wheaton Hut
Route Details
Wheaton Hut is a backcountry alpine hut in Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island, maintained by BC Parks and operated by the Alpine Club of Canada (Vancouver Island section). The hut is a Gothic-arch-style cabin and is not heated, so expect a basic shelter thatโs mainly for dry sleeping and cooking space.
It uses an open-use, first-come-first-served approach with no exclusive advance booking. You may need to share the space with other backcountry travellers, and standard BC Parks backcountry fees apply (typically handled via self-registration). If the cabin is full, carry a tent as a backup. The most common access route is via the Buttle Lake trail; in winter, the hut can be buried under snow and may require digging out to reach the door.
