Awatere Hut
Awatere Hut is a Department of Conservation basic backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay). It’s a 6-bunk hut built in 1960, set in beech forest at about 600 m, and it’s positioned close to a road end, making it a common destination for day or weekend tramps and for novice trampers.
Use is free and no bookings are required—access is first come, first served. The hut has mattresses, toilets, and a fireplace; drinking water is not provided. Awatere Hut was renovated by Backcountry Trust volunteers in February 2024. If you’re approaching from Kashmir Road, expect a track taking roughly 1–4 hours depending on route and pace.
