Howletts Hut

Howletts Hut is a backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park, Hawke’s Bay region, used for public overnight stays and operated by the Heretaunga Tramping Club under Department of Conservation oversight. The hut is a standard eight-bunk setup, with no advance booking required—stays operate on a first-come, first-served basis. The hut has tank water and a woodburner for heating, plus toilets with a pit latrine disposal system.

It can be approached from Kashmir Road, with the route described as following Makaretu Road to Mill Road, then continuing to Kashmir Road and finishing at the road end; from there the track to Daphne Hut begins at Moorcock Stream. From Daphne Hut, continue downstream on the Tukituki River, then take the steep Daphne Spur track (true right) alongside a side stream, with a poled route above the bush leading to Howletts Hut.
