Hinerua Hut
Hinerua Hut is a four-bunk backcountry hut in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay), run by the Department of Conservation. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis (no bookings required), and it was built in 1960 for animal control work, then upgraded in 1993. Expect snow and high rainfall at this higher elevation (1080 m).
Inside, there’s a wood burner for heating, plus a tank water supply and sleeping places; drinking water is untreated. The hut has an on-site toilet system using pit latrines, and it also has a fireplace and mattresses. Fees apply; you’ll need a Standard Hut Ticket for each night (or a Backcountry Hut Pass), placed in the honesty box at the hut.
