Baikie Hut
Baikie Hut is a Department of Conservation basic four-bunk backcountry hut in Ruataniwha Conservation Park (Canterbury). Use is first come, first served and bookings aren’t required. The hut has mattresses and a fireplace, and there are toilets with pit latrine disposal.
Access is via 4WD; you need 4WD access permission and a key from the landholder (Pukaki Downs Station), and tracks to the hut can close at times, such as during periods of high fire danger. People travelling by 4WD are expected to bring their own firewood, and vehicles are to be left at the hut to protect the fragile environment above it. Baikie Hut is a historic mustering hut built in 1948; a hitching rail remains outside for tying up horses.
