Beetham Hut
Beetham Hut is a New Zealand Alpine Club backcountry hut in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, installed at the start of 2021. It’s a small four-bunk hut (with mattresses) positioned near Beetham Stream on the western flank of Malte Brun, used for climbing access to the Malte Brun range and also a ski touring base in winter.
The hut has a radio and a water tank, plus a toilet and cooking bench, with solar lighting. No fireplace is provided. Parties must walk in via the Tasman Glacier (there’s no direct helicopter access), and the Beetham Valley is cut off and not recommended; you can reach the hut via an access point north of Beetham Valley using the old Malte Brun hut site to the north, or by going up the Reay Valley.
Fees are NZ$20 per night for members and NZ$40 per night for non-members; youth rates are available, and children aged 10 and under are free. Booking is handled through the NZ Alpine Club hut system; for radio/booking coordination, there is a daily radio check-in and weather update to huts in the area at 6:45 pm (radio coverage isn’t always available at this hut).
