Barneys Whare

Barneys Whare is a private hut on Orongorongo Station on the Turakirae Coast (near the southern edge of Remutaka Forest Park). It’s used by backcountry trampers as an overnight base and is sometimes bookable by the public through the station owners.

From the hut area, nearby tramping follows the historic coastal route used to move stock before roads and railways were built over the Remutaka Hill; when tides blocked travel, people spent nights in small huts along the way. Near the hut there’s a picnic table and seating, and fresh water can be obtained from a stream nearby. Booking/availability is handled directly by Orongorongo Station rather than public DOC-style hut booking systems.
